Section 3 - Vehicles acquired second hand by the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company

A significant number and varied assortment of vehicles were acquired by the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company second-hand during the Tilling era, as a result of taking over small independent operators, or from larger concerns to offset vehicle shortages. Also included here are the many vehicles transferred to Eastern Counties by its four constituent companies, upon formation in October of 1931. Vehicle makes include ADC , AEC , Albion, Austin, Bedford, Bristol, Chevrolet, Commer, Daimler, Dennis, Dodge, Foden, Ford, Gilford, Graham-Dodge, Guy, Karrier, Lancia, Leyland, Maudsley, Reo, SOS , Star, Thorneycroft and Tilling Stevens.

Vehicles acquired from United Automobile Services Ltd (East Anglia Area)

A total of 233 vehicles were acquired from this constituent company comprising, fifteen 48 seat Leyland Titan TD1 double deck buses new in 1930; nineteen 29 seat Leyland Tiger TS3 coaches new in 1930; five 20 seat Graham Dodge coaches new in 1928-1930; one 26 seat Gilford 1660T coach new in 1929; one 20 seat Leyland Z5 saloon new in 1925; ten 25-30 seat Albion saloons new in 1927-1930; forty 26 and 30 seat AEC 415 saloons and coaches new in 1926; nineteen 32 seat ADC 415A saloons new in 1927; eighteen 32 seat ADC 415D saloons new in 1927 and 1930; five 32 seat ADC 416D saloons new in 1930; four 28 seat ADC 417 saloons new in 1930; two 20 seat Guy OND saloons new in 1929; one 32 seat Guy FBB coach new in 1928; twenty-eight 35 seat ADC 425 saloons new in 1928; one 30 seat AEC Reliance coach new in 1930; four 26 and 30 seat Bristol BGW coaches new in 1928 and 1929; seven 32 seat Thorneycroft BC saloons new in 1929; two 20 and 32 seat Thorneycroft UB saloons new in 1928; two 32 seat Thorneycroft LC saloons new in 1930; one 29 seat Thorneycroft A1 saloon new in 1926; six 22-28 seat Daimler CF6 coaches new in 1929 and 1930; twenty-four 30 and 35 seat ADC 423 saloons and coaches new in 1928; seventeen 30 seat Tilling Stevens B10A2 saloons new in 1930 and one 23 seat Star Flyer VB coach new in 1929.

Vehicles acquired from Norwich Omnibus Company Ltd

A total of 23 vehicles were acquired from this operator which was taken over by Eastern Counties in December of 1935. These comprised two 52 seat Park Royal bodied AEC Regent 1 double deck buses new in 1931; two 30 seat Bristol bodied Bristol BGW saloons new in 1928; six 31 and 32 seat Eaton bodied Bristol BGW saloons new in 1930; five 56 seat ECOC bodied Leyland TD1 saloons new in 1928 and 1929 and eight 48 seat Weymann bodied Bristol GJW double deck buses new in 1933.

Worthy of note here is that LG4 and LG6 were converted to open top in 1950 for summer holiday season use along the sea front in Felixstowe. They were painted all over cream with black wheels and wings, gold fleet names and between decks publicity lettering and remained in annual seasonal service until they were replaced with a pair of 1940 vintage former Brighton, Hove & District open topped Bristol K5Gs in 1961. It is pleasing to know that LG4 (later HLG4 and then HLG496) survives in preservation and has recently undergone a superb restoration in open topped form by its current owner, who went to great lengths to repatriate the vehicle in 2000 from California in the United States of America, where it had been exported in 1962.
