Schedule of Cambridge City stage carriage routes - pre NBC . . .

This schedule details the network of stage carriage bus routes operated in the city of Cambridge from the mid 1950s to the mid 1960s by the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company.  Each route is shown in street by street detail.

The majority of these routes were inherited from the Ortona Motor Company Limited in July 1931.

SERVICE: 101

FROM:  RAILWAY STATION   TO:  CHESTERTON ( GREEN END ROAD )

DOUBLE DECK OPERATED

Outward route: via Station Road, Hills Road, Regent Street, St Andrews Street, Sidney Street, Magdalene Street, Chesterton Lane, Chesterton Road and High Street (Chesterton), to terminate at Green End Road.

Return route: As outward route in reverse as far as Magdalene Street then via Bridge Street , St John’s Street, Trinity Street , St Mary’s Street and Market Street to Sidney Street , then as outward route in reverse to Railway Station.

FROM:  ST THOMAS’ ROAD or COLDHAM’S LANE   TO:  MEADOWLANDS

DOUBLE DECK OPERATED

Outward route: either from Coldham’s Lane via Brooks Road to Mill Road or from St Thomas’ Road via Birdwood Road and Perne Road to Mill Road, then via Gonville Place, Regent Street, St Andrews Street, Hobson Street, King Street, Maid’s Causeway, Newmarket Road, Whitehill Road, Thorley Road, Rawlyn Road, Ring Road and Newmarket Road, to terminate at Meadowlands.

Return route: As outward route in reverse as far as Maid’s Causeway, then via Emmanuel Road and Emmanuel Street to St Andrews Street , then as outward route in reverse to either St Thomas ’ Road or Coldham’s Lane.

FROM:   STRANGEWAYS ROAD

TO:  NEWNHAM ( GRANTCHESTER ROAD )

Outward route: via Queen Edith’s Way, Mowbray Road, Cherry Hinton Road, Hills Road, Regent Street, St Andrews Street, Petty Cury, Peas Hill, Benet Street, Trumpington Street, Fen Causeway, Newnham Road and Barton Road, to terminate at Newnham (Grantchester Road).

Return route: As outward route in reverse as far as Trumpington Street , then via King’s Parade, St Mary’s Street and Market Street to St Andrews Street , then as outward route in reverse to Strangeways Road .

Outward route: via Hills Road, Regent Street, St Andrews Street, Sidney Street, Bridge Street, Magdalene Street and Castle Street, to terminate at Girton Corner (Huntingdon Road).

Return route:  As outward route in reverse as far as Bridge Street , then via St John’s Street , Trinity Street , St Mary’s Street and Market Street to St Andrews Street , then as outward route in reverse to Red Cross.

FROM:  KING'S HEDGES ROAD  TO:  TRUMPINGTON (BISHOP'S ROAD)

Outward route: via Milton Road, Victoria Avenue, Jesus Lane, Bridge Street, St John’s Street, King’s Parade, Trumpington Street and Trumpington Road, to terminate at Trumpington (Bishop’s Road).

Return route: As outward route in reverse as far as King’s Parade, then via St Mary’s Street, Market Street, St Andrew’s Street and Emmanuel Street to Victoria Avenue and Milton Road to King’s Hedges Road.

FROM:  PEAS HILL  TO:  OAKINGTON ( CHURCH LANE)

Outward route: via Benet Street, Trumpington Street, Fen Causeway, Newnham Road, Barton Road, Grange Road, Adams Road, Wilberforce Road, Madingley Road, Storey’s Way, Huntingdon Road and Girton Road, to terminate at Oakington (Church Lane).

Return route:  As outward route in reverse as far as Trumpington Street , then via King’s Parade to Peas Hill.

FROM:  COLDHAM'S LANE  To:  ALEX WOOD ROAD

Outward route: via Newmarket Road, East Road, Gonville Place, Regent Street, St Andrews Street, Sidney Street, Bridge Street, Magdalene Street, Chesterton Lane, Milton Road, Gilbert Road and Carlton Way, to terminate at Alex Wood Road.

Return route: As outward route in reverse as far as Bridge Street , then via St John’s Street , Trinity Street , St Mary’s Street and Market Street to St Andrews Street , then as outward route in reverse to Coldham’s Lane ( Brooks Road ).

FROM:  DRUMMER STREET  

TO:  CHERRY HINTON (CHURCH) OR COLVILLE ROAD ( BRIDEWELL ROAD )

Outward route: via Parker Street, Parkside, Mill Road, Coleridge Road, Cherry Hinton Road, and High Street, to terminate at either Colville Road or Cherry Hinton (Church).

Return route:  As outward route in reverse.
